Work Packages

1. Business model and commercial sustainability

Leader Partner: INLE

Objectives:

  • To substantiate, validate and execute a Business Plan and Commercialisation Strategy, enabled through commercially focused business models and market studies.
  • To coordinate and protect the Intellectual Property, and to guide the formal EUPO and USPTO filings of minimum 3 Patents with the ultimate goal of protecting and retaining the strategic commercially sensitive IP “for Europe” and “within Europe”, in turn giving commercialising actors within the consortium a competitive advantage on a worldwide stage.

Deliverable 1.2 Analysis of European structures to support microalgae wine producers

Deliverable 1.3  Specific measures for algae production for young and female wine producers

Policy brief: Enabling and Incentivizing the Use of Effluents as Raw Material in a Circular Economy in the European Union

Policy brief: Incentivizing R&D and Innovation in the EU Wine Sector

Policy brief: Increasing Social Awareness and Market Acceptance of Microalgae-Based Products Derived from Wine Effluents

Policy brief: Improving the Business Environment for Young Farmers in the EU Wine Sector

2. Valorization of winery liquid effluent for Chlorella cultivation

Leader Partner: IPS

Objectives:

  • To characterize the biological and physicochemical properties of the winery liquid effluent, including biochemical composition, microbial presence and physicochemical properties;
  • To analyze fluctuations in the liquid effluent biological and physicochemical properties in distinct wine production seasons;
  • To design and optimize the formulation of Chlorella cultivation medium, based on effluent characterization and biomass growth;
  • To optimize Chlorella cultivation at laboratory and pilot scale (cultivation medium formulation, CO2 supply, light intensity) to maximize growth;
  • To analyze the impact of cultivation conditions on either Chlorella biomass composition (protein, lipid, carbohydrate and pigments content) or cell viability (cell membrane integrity, membrane potential and reactive oxygen species (ROS), as a measure of cell stress;
  • To supply biomass inoculum for production at demonstration scale in WP4.

3. Capture and storage of wine fermentation off-gas

Leader Partner: NOVIS

Objectives:

  • To set up a wine fermentation off-gas capture and storage system integrated with an artificial intelligence (AI) unit capable of monitoring off-gas composition and flow;
  • To efficiently capture 2 ton of off-gas/year from a 20.000L red wine fermenter;
  • To characterize off-gas composition and identify potential seasonal variations;
  • To efficiently store 2 ton of off-gas/year in liquid form.

4. Chlorella demo-scale production through the supply of stored CO2

Leader Partner: A4F

Objectives:

  • To install a Chlorella demonstration-scale production unit, through the integration and valorisation of gaseous and liquid effluents from wine production;
  • To demonstrate the technical feasibility of supplying wine fermentation CO2 to both semi-closed (raceway) and closed (tubular) photobioreactors (PBRs) and maximizing CO2 uptake/minimizing CO2 loss;
  • To optimize the operation of the integrated Chlorella production unit to be able to: 1) produce, at least, 1 ton of dry biomass/year; 2) bioremediate 2 ton of CO2/year; and 3) treat 80 m3 of liquid effluent;
  • To select the most suitable technology(ies) for energy-efficient harvesting of 1 ton of dry biomass/year.

Deliverable 4.1 Demonstration-scale Chlorella production unit

5. Recovery of Chlorella bioactive compounds

Leader Partner: LEITAT

Objectives:

  • To apply several pre-treatments for cell-wall disruption, allowing to get the best compromises in yield and quality of bioactive components from the algae cells.
  • To define best cost-in-use sustainable technologies for extraction, fractionation and purification of algal biomass into intermediates compounds and ingredients.
  • To optimize the utilization of organophilic membranes for VOCs recovery from Chlorella cultures.

6. Development of Chlorella-based food, cosmetics and agricultural products

Leader Partner: AVIPE

Objectives:

  • To assess the physicochemical, nutritional, microbiological properties of the ingredients obtained.
  • To formulate innovative products for agriculture, food, cosmetics and packaging.
  • To test and validate the bioactivity and toxicity.

7. Sustainability, logistics and technoeconomic modelling

Leader Partner: IDENER

Objectives:

  • To holistically integrate the generated knowledge in a unified mathematical model of the process and to integrate it in an optimisation problem.
  • To produce a set of optimal parameters for the design of the process.
  • To produce a virtual plant of the process.
  • To evaluate the techno-economic viability of the products and processes.
  • To identify the most environmentally friendly algae cultivation and downstream processing scheme, where the resources use and emissions are minimized.
  • To evaluate the environmental profile of the final process through the implementation of the LCA.
  • To assess social impacts associated with the REDWine business model.
  • To tackle logistical barriers identified throughout the entire process value chain aiming at smoothing the process flow.

8. Communication and dissemination

Leader Partner: AVIPE

Objectives:

  • To efficiently communicate, promote and create broad EU awareness of the REDWine concept to all stakeholders.
  • To efficiently disseminate the outputs of REDWine innovation activities to both the scientific and commercial eco-systems.
